Over the years I’ve got myself into a few predicaments where my way back out raises questions, like maybe there’s more to this physical life then meets the eye. It’s kind of like a gentle hand reaches down, grabs me by the scruff of the neck, gives me a gentle shake and sets me back on my feet again. The following experience is one of these, but maybe a bit more on the esoteric side than some others, which you might see in this space later.

During the summer of ’94 I was hard at it, salvage logging and milling the logs into lumber, with orders filled and shipped out weekly. I was also running a caving expedition on Prince of Wales Island in SE Alaska. Take a look at my previous article on the caves of AK for more on that. While up on top of Perue peak (the featured photo) looking for more holes in the ground, I had a complete and total physical collapse. I could barely walk my way back to camp, even slid much of the way down the mountain on my rear end. Once we broke camp and got back to the house I tried to figure out what was going on with my previously indomitable body. When I lay down it felt like I had 100 pounds resting on top of me. For 6 weeks the only way to get up a flight of stairs was to crawl.

Keep in mind I was in top condition and had not long before back packed a 150 pound anvil out through 5 miles of steep terrain. I weighed in at a compact and powerful 145 pounds at the time. Living in remote Alaska I was not one to go running off to the doctors office for trifles such as broken bones or sliced flesh that leak red fluid, I diagnosed my symptoms as best I could. It’s said that after all the tests come up negative what you’re left with is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). At the same time I also acquired reactions when eating most foods. It appeared that I was looking at a major life change.

I wasn’t about to change my usual pattern and break down and cry my little head off, so I took this setback as a challenge. I accepted that I was seriously ill. And that here was a problem to be solved. I gathered up and read all the books I could find on connecting with the mind or spirit. I dove inward and explored the crevasses of my inner being. I meditated for hours on end and felt a force I had not known was there before. The only food I was able to eat without reacting to was brown rice and veggies with some deer and fish mixed in occasionally. After 2 months of being physically idle, I started working again to try to catch up on milling orders that had been put on hold. Getting out of bed in the morning was a challenge. Each step I took was a mountain to be climbed. Maintaining a positive attitude was a daily chore, but at the same time a necessity for my well-being. I knew my life had changed, but at the same time I was determined to make the best of it. Every day I focused on connecting with that force of energy I had glimpsed earlier. For at least an hour a day I would lay on my favorite bed of moss beside a little trickle of water who’s quiet murmur would sharpen my focus. I would draw energy from this inner force, and learn how to develop easy access to it. I did this for many years, and even now 25 years later can connect with this force in 30 seconds.

At that time my friend who lived a couple thousand miles away was also interested in the metaphysical aspect of the human spirit. For over two years we ‘met’ and developed our ‘third eye’ focus. We would connect daily, first at a predetermined time, and later, after we had developed our connection stronger; we could ‘call’ one or the other at will. We tried various things such as seeing what color or shape the other was thinking of, but that never was successful. What was always strongest was connecting to the energy force that we all carry inside and melding that into one powerful stream of golden energy. When ‘connected’ to this stream I would focus on being in a complete and strong, healthy body.

While doing this internal work I was also exploring the food allergies I had acquired when I got knocked down. For 15 years I would clean my system over a two week period by eating only rice and veggies. Then I would eat a handful of something else like corn or wheat. If I got the instant telltale red bumps running up the arm I would clean my system for another two weeks and try something else. After 12 years I noticed I could eat more variety with no reaction. Eventually I was back to eating pretty much anything as long as I kept it within reason. At the same time I would notice my energy coming back. I clearly remember waking up one day without the usual oppressive, overbearing weight on my body. I had an unbelievable amount of energy and started up running again. That lasted a couple weeks before the weight settled in on me again, but it didn’t last long.

So now 30 years later I know I have CFS and various food sensitivities. 3 days of hard labor gets me shaky and weak, so I only do 2 1/2 at a time. Corn eaten more than once or twice a month gives me reactions. So I don’t eat corn often. I still tap into my inner energy field on a regular basis and recharge as needed. This experience, like so many in this amazing life we live, was a simply wonderful thing. I’ve seen that, with focus, we can apply ourselves and get real results. Maybe not immediately, but patience is another virtue we can develop while waiting for results.

    We are a phenomenal being created by a phenomenal God. There is more to what we can actually imagine, see or relate with.

    Very inspiring! I’m going through a similar process with food issues and uncomfortable bodily reactions. I’ve made a lot of progress in the past few years, mainly through dietary modification and herbal formulas, but I’ve no doubt that the mind’s role in healing plays a big part and one I haven’t yet fully explored.       Hey thanks Truth! I’m on a quest to learn as much about our gut microbiome as possible so will look more into Gundry teachings. My gal is off to Taymount clinic next week to get a transplant. We’ve been following Gregor for years now and eat whole food plant based, no sugar oil or salt. And we grow a lot of our own food. If you didn’t see the Hugelkultur article I wrote, scroll down in the General section a bit. But yeah, now I’m thinking I’ve had leaky gut issues for most of my life, but my good eating has kept it in check mostly. Stress and over doing activity played parts in my collapse no doubt.         Essential Oils are supper important for Hormones and the Immune System,,,, unprocessed oils,,, like in Coconut Milk,,, or Avocados and nuts (not legumes like peanuts and cashews).

        Salt gets a bad rap too, any rancher know if you don’t put a salt lick out your animals are going to get sick. Here in Costa Rica they put FLUORIDE in the salt,,,,, OMG,,, what is the world thinking!?!?!?!!!!! Salt with other minerals in it is a good thing, like Himalayan Salt. Also salt concentrations in the gut actually POWERS the transfer of nutrients across the stomach into the blood.

        We might differ opinions on the salt. Anything that is hard on the endothelium layer is hard on me. Dr. Gregor has science based info on the subject at nutritionfacts.org. On the other hand minerals, in the right mix and quantity are no doubt good for the bod. Larger sizes, not so much. Thinking like, a falling rock on the head. Yeah, what’s up with fluoride? Gotta get rid of the chemical waste somehow, and what better way than to use it to support the multi billion dollar sick care industry? Cheers!
